REVIEW: COLOUR HAZE + TAU + JESUS THE SNAKE LIVE AT HARD CLUB [5/19]
The much awaited return of
Colour Haze to Portugal is finally upon us so we start our pilgrimage
to Porto to experience once again this transcendental live ritual.
The majestic Hard Club was the venue chosen to receive all brothers
and sisters in peace, congregating for this memorable love fest with
the great support of Portuguese psych rockers Jesus The Snake and
German folk creatures Tau.
With the always difficult task of opening the ceremony, Jesus the Snake rose to the occasion and showed why they are one of the most promising bands in the country at the moment. Presenting their ambitious debut EP, self-released by the band digitally last year, the quartet from Vizela offered an evolving and captivating performance with their warm psychedelic rock tainted with vintage acid drops. Dreamy guitar riffs floating around wonderful instrumentals provided by a gifted rhythmic section and wild progressive keyboards made us all, already there, feel welcomed and comfortable as the people still getting in, were greeted by the inviting classic 70´s vibe & dust of the group with a colorful and vibrant show.
The house is half packed when Tau came to the stage, changing completely the atmosphere of the place but keeping the fun going with a quite hypnotic gig. The experimental band from Berlin, has so many different influences that is hard to describe their sound other than heavy world music. With an entrancing performance filled with all kind of weird instruments and sounds, they certainly took this ride to the next level. Primal percussions, repetitive vocals and a ripping acoustic guitar are blasting in a unearthly freak ritual right when the insanely powerful weed smoked moments before begins to kick in and take hold... with THC levels that at times well exceed 25%, the Royal Gorilla squeegeed my third eye squeaky clean, leaving me no other option but to embrace this strange music and chase the magic dragon through folk tales and bizarre rhythms.
But if few people were expecting this sonic extravaganza, clearly no one was prepared for the draining psych marathon that would follow when the headliners Colour Haze took the stage. The veteran power trio from Munich returned to Portugal, after a mesmerizing appearance at SonicBlast last year, now joined by Jan Fassbender on keyboards. As soon as the first chords of "She Said" came up, the crowd now filling up the room, went wild and quickly surrender to a flawless 2 hour set by the magnificent group. In perfect harmony, the quartet went through classics from "Aquamaria" to "Tempel" and fresh material such as "Skydancer I-II" or "Überall" painting gorgeous soundscapes that combined with the spellbinding light show created the utmost magical experience. Stefan Koglek, the guitar virtuoso and maestro of the band, conducted perfectly this psychedelic ensemble as drummer Manfred Merwald and bassist Philipp Rasthofer, one of the tightest rhythmic sections on the scene, laid out the beautiful compositions now adorned with the celestial keyboards giving the songs more depth and smoothing even further their transitions. Like a nuclear reactor melting to its core, the cosmic radiation coming from the stage was so powerful that I was sweating profusely and was forced to go upstairs, where on my knees and drooling, I watched the stellar performance culminate with the quintessential encore that brought us "House Of Rushammon" and "Love" to the ecstatic fans who reciprocate in the end with a well deserved long ovation.

Pointless for me go any further trying to describe
such an epic concert as words fail to do it any justice. Colour Haze
live is something that everybody should witness as much as they can
since it´s such a life changing experience... and in a world
dominated by hate we sure could use a few more bands like this
spreading the love around!
Special thanks to the production team Garboyl Lives for
allowing us to cover and report this unforgettable event. ❤️ Brothers & Sisters

REVIEW: PETYR - SMOLYK [2018]
Coming in
hot after bombing several listing tops
of last year with their amazing S/T debut, heavy psych quartet Petyr
fronted by pro skater Riley Hawk and based in Oceanside, California,
are ready to do it all again with their latest LP titled Smolyk. In a
clear nod to 90´s
street legend Peter Smolik, the band returns with a freshly baked set of full
blown hard psych jams filled with grinding solos, Tre Flip riffs and
gnarly acid drops in another thrasher release by Outer Battery Records, already available on digital platforms with the cd and vinyl
including a limited
edition on a multi color blend power
sliding on June 1st.
Fresh
off an Australian tour and Roadburn´s San Diego Take Over, the
stoned out foursome deliver another wild ride through fuzzy guitar
riffs & solos with a crushing and stomping rhythmic section in an
intoxicating 70´s haze blaze. Sticking up to their working formula
but with a more punkish attitude and approach, the new record leans
more to the heavy sounds then the predominant psychedelia infused
debut, as the jams get faster, dirtier and gnar. Wailing guitar solos
and electrifying riffs shredding over a high-powered drum kit
accompanied by ripping bass lines, feed of each other to carve a
classic set of skate rock anthems. The jams, now with a darker and
doomy atmosphere, constantly bounce between different feels and
tempos, as the rad grooves gain speed and memento allowing them to perform their insane bag of tricks so steezy.
For lovers of the So Cal scene in particular and skateboarding culture in general, here´s a banger that will turn these cats from Ams to Pros on the highly competitive San Diego Heavy Psych team.

REVIEW: COSMOS - COMING HOME [2018]
Art by Chelsea Meatchem
From the
increasingly prolific Australian music scene comes our next sonic
odyssey with the second album by the three piece heavy psych blues
band Cosmos,
based in Melbourne. Titled Coming
Home and
released
on the hazy day of April 20, is a fine example of the many rad music
coming from down under. With the perfect blend of heavy psychedelia
and blues, or PsycheDelta as I like to call it, the aussie power trio
continues their musical exploration with a masterpiece of cosmic
proportions, as warm compositions and fluid songwriting with stellar
guitar work supported by an exalted rhythm section and superb vocals
expressing the
most exquisite kind of agony and anger explode in the vast galactic
sky.
The
band (officially) formed in 2015, that has since then matured as a
group and taken a more solid approach to their sound, came up with a
concept for this record of “a
being coming back home, but not to Earth” and hence the chosen
title.
That´s also the track, after a noisy intro of weird field
recordings, that sets the tone and launches this kaleidoscopic ride
as the band slowly build their bluesy songs until they detonate into
fully fledged psychedelic jams. The chemistry and wonderful
musicianship here are of an almost other-worldly beauty, as the
fuzzed-out guitar licks, fed by a galloping drum kit and pulsating
bass lines paired
with the strident
vocals continuously bounce
between different moods and tempos, from the classic blues of Albert
King or Muddy Waters to more contemporary acts such as The Black
Angels or The Flying Eyes. This record has soul like a few have,
melodic mellow grooves and wild dirty sections so good and addictive
that even the smooth and chilled out interlude “Wanderings” will
be stuck in your head for days to come.
One
of the most solid releases of the year that will definitely put this
band on the map as a powerful bluesy trio with tremendous potential
and set the bar high for their next album... which is already in the
works!
PHARLEE
Pharlee live at Ladybird Skatepark during Roadburn San Diego Takeover.
Zack Oakley (JOY) has joined the band as the drummer and their debut LP is coming out soon via Tee Pee Records.
