REVIEW: DAAL DAZED - S/T EP (2019)

Art by Nick Potts

Greta Van Who!? Here´s the rightful heirs of the 70s.
Emerging from the Main river banks in Aschaffenburg, Germany, the young sextet Daal Dazed blooms with its fertile roots in the 70s Heavy Blues and Hard Rock. Debuting with their self-titled EP, released digitally and on vinyl last month via H42Records, this impressive ensemble only needs a little over ten minutes and three tracks to showcase all their talent and enormous potential. Channeling the spirit of classic acts such as Deep Purple, ZZ Top or Blue Cheer and tapping beautifully into that sweet raw sound of vintage bluesy rock, these gents are destined for something great. Adding a cool and personalized flair with the tantalizing percussion and seductive organ, the group shines bright as the lustful and passionate vocals are laid down over the titillating grooves held by the thigh rhythmic section while two aroused guitars boogie together slinky licks and dazzling solos. What you get is a raw and genuine first effort that serves as a nice introduction to the band and a revealing preview of the finer things to come. Let me tell you something, if this little gem doens`t leave you with a boner... I suggest you see your doctor!

🔥 REVIEW: WARP - S/T (2019) 🔥

From the flourishing Israeli heavy psych scene, that just keeps on giving amazing new bands over the past few years, comes another blooming project... Warp, a power trio based in Tel Aviv formed by three friends and members of various local punk rock bands who wanted to do something different, with a more riff driven approach and vintage sound. After several years confined to a basement bending and twisting their sonic output, the band are finally ready to unleash their impressive debut on CD via Reality Rehab Records (February 15th) and on Vinyl by the renowned german label Nasoni Records with a scheduled release for March. In a perfect storm of stoner, hard rock and doom with thundering riffs, rumbling solos and the deafening roar of a windy rhythmic section as dark, gloomy and powerful ripple currents fill the air with the high voltage discharges evoking the evil spirits of Black Sabbath, Witch or Fuzz.

You can definitely see the punk roots as the songs develop fast into a high pace of raw and primitive yet highly addictive rock tunes, that is until the Sabbath sleazy bridges and greasy breaks appear with the wicked fuzzy saturated guitar unleashing sordid riffs and degenerated solos accompanied by the demolishing sound of the drums, the obliterating bass lines and stony corrupt vocals, coming all together to create these amazing sections within the songs. An astonishing debut by the three piece that looks more like an obscure and lost demo straight from the golden 70´s with that old vintage bluesy sound that alternates between fast and slow tempos... but always keeping it heavy and groovy.

With 8 songs running a little under 30 minutes you´ll find yourself dumbfounded with this amazing record on loop all day long and I don´t blame you... because it happened to me too.

REVIEW: THE LUNAR EFFECT - THE CALM BEFORE THE CALM [2019]

The Lunar Effect, was originally a solo project by guitarist Jon Jefford, born from the ashes of DeepSeaGreen, an exciting upcoming act from London, that disbanded in 2013. Receiving widespread praise with the release of the S/T debut EP via 3 Ravens Records, Jon decided to expand the project into a fully-fledged touring band starting by recruiting his brother Daniel (also ex-DSG) for the drums. After writing and recording some demos the duo were giging with some local musicians around the city venues but only when they met bass player Brett Halsey and singer Josh Gosling in 2016, had they finally found the perfect line up to evolve. The band begun to have a shift in sound with the new blood, refining their sound and adapting to a new vocalist style while experimenting more with 60’s and 70’s psychedelic elements, they decided to record, mix and master their next EP Strange Lands themselves, self-released that same year and receiving glowing critics from around the world.

Since then the band began working on new material for their first full length album titled Calm Before The Calm, out today via german label Kozmik Artifactz on CD and Vinyl, and it´s visible with this release how much they´ve grown and solidified their sound of fuzzy riffs and laid down grooves, in a perfect blend of vintage psychedelia, classic hard blues rock and post-grunge, dipping into The Beatles, Floyd, Zeppelin and Sabbath but adding a little Cream to their flavor with the powerful and grungy vocals reminiscent of 90´s scene from Seattle. With a new approach to the songwriting, making it now a team effort, the compositions flow more organically on this balanced and solid record, allowing the band to reach to its full potential. A groovy and thigh rhythmic section, slowly develops the grooves and lays the foundation for the warm fuzzy guitar riffs and gritty raw solos to float around until the mighty and hypnotic vocals take over and tie everything together into a sonic bundle of Kyuss, Radio Moscow and Graveyard. And if the instruments are spot on, creating atmospheric, bluesy and muddy compositions, the radiating vocals with extensive variations of mood and tonality takes it all to the next level, following the lead perfectly either with smooth & mellow verses or exploding & soaring chorus, always engaging and captivating.

These lads should be proud with what they´ve achieved on their brilliant debut LP, taking a giant step forward as band and choosing a righteous direction that certainly holds them a bright future.
