REVIEW: HOLY MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVERS - TONIGHT THE MACHETE DREAMS [2019]
You´re
gonna need to create a new musical genre if you try to label a band
so skilled, original and unique as Holy Mountain Top Removers!
Their bandcamp bio sums it up pretty good, though: “Imagine
if Jodorowsky and Morricone met up in rural Tennessee...” Yeah,
its a whole nother level!
Released in august by indie label Centripetal Force, the sophomore album by the american trio shows how well the band has matured following their path through the road less traveled of innovative music. Cinematic soundscapes, meditative ambiences, noisy drones and reverberated outbursts clash in sublime balance of chaos and harmony as divine interludes, blending contrasting styles and climaxing moods swings, come together to create the perfect soundtrack to your life.
Back in 2016, I wrote about their debut that: “experimental surf, western spaghetti instrumentals with Middle Eastern influences, might sound weird... but it´s weirdly good!” The splendid follow up titled Tonight the Machete Dreams expands and solidifies their signature sound, enlightening the musicianship of great finesse from the dynamic trinity that rose from the ashes of psych rockers Hellbender, emerging on the underground Nashville scene. With masterfully songwriting as this, Mikey Allred (keys/bass/trombone), Edmond Villa (drums) and Anthony Ford (guitar/vocals) are not only pushing musical boundaries, they are dissolving them altogether merging beautifully so distinct sounds into delicate melodies that constantly change their texture while different layers are added as the songs develop. Taking now the natural leap of including vocals in a couple of tunes and raising important issues like if people today even have taste or understand music as they´re being bombarded with numbing pop culture constantly... hell, this is like sonic psilocybin that takes you on a vivid and kaleidoscopic trip somewhere between the smooth psychedelia of All Them Witches or The Entrance Band, spiked with Spindrift´s Spaghetti Western and the experimental side of The Myrrors or Weeed that will detox your consciousness and certainly broaden your horizons.

An absolute masterpiece from a band that really stands out from the rest and only continues to improve... well, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson said it best:“when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”
